ust means it comes from a chicken that happens to

lay brown

eggs. The

nutritional content is the same as white

eggs.

The way a chicken is raised and fed makes the difference in

nutrient

content.

White

- Popular with farmers because the breed that lays

consistently the

most eggs

happens to lay white eggs.

Organic

-This means they come from a farm that is certified

organic from the

USDA. They

have to be on an organic farm

before they are 3 days

old and must be fed only

certified

organic feed grown without

pesticide. These chickens are also

not given

any antibiotics.

Cage free

- Means that can roam around, but that does not

necessarily mean

they are ever

outside and given opportunity

to get fresh air and

sunshine or to forage on natural

grasses.

Please note that this

situation is sometimes true of industrial

organic eggs

as well.

Vegeterian fed

- The chickens are fed only vegetable matter,

but this is not the

normal diet of a

chicken. Just like people

they have different

nutritional needs. so do chickens.

Laying hens needs extra calcium and protein to be able to lay

good

eggs. Many

good quality organic egg farmers feed their

chickens a

diet that include crab meal &

oyster shells for grit

and calcium. Gross

as this sounds, chickens also like to eat

bugs.

Free range

- Began as a reaction against commercially raised

caged chickens.

Usually means

you have a chicken yard

outside where the chickens

can go wherever they want to.

The benefit is less stress, excerise and humane treatment.

Pastured

- Similar to free range. The chickens are outside, but

they are

periodically moved.

This exposes them to fresh

clovers, grass and

broad leaf vegetation which is really

good

for them. This gives their

eggs and their meat higher omega

3's, vitamin e,

and lower fat and

cholesterol.

It also means their environment is cleaner because they are

not

standing in

their own poop all the time. That can cause

fecal burn on

their feet and other

diseases. Gross. Please

note that even free

range chickens can suffer this

condition if

their yards are not moved

periodically. Also grass and

vegetation wont

grow in yards that never

get moved.
